For over 4,000 years, mankind has communicated its most profound thoughts through literature. Our aim at Sophene is to illuminate and revitalize some of the finest works of literature from around the globe. Although we publish a range of literature, we specialize in translated classic fiction that has withstood the test of time in its original language, but has been lost upon a recent generation of readers in English.
“A classic is a book that has never finished saying what it has to say.” – Italo Calvino
Our philosophy is to allow our translated literature to speak for itself in its new language. In order to help readers contextualise the books in our catalog, our works are accompanied by additional materials such as extensive footnotes, introductions or afterwords, or online historical materials that help to make the reading experience richer without interfering with the author’s original intent.
“Armenian folklore has it that three apples fell from Heaven: one for the teller of a story, one for the listener, and the third for the one who ‘took it to heart’. What a pity Heaven awarded no apple to the one who wrote the story down.” – Nancy Willard
Sophene Armeniaca (which translates to ‘from Armenia’ in Latin) is our first endeavour where we pay homage to the stories and storytellers from one of the oldest nations of the world.
